Another major investment has been made to strengthen Canada’s life sciences sector, growing dual-use industrial capacity and protecting Canadian sovereignty.
The Government of Canada announced a $67 million investment in the life sciences sector through the Life Sciences Fund. As part of this investment, Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation (API) is receiving $21.9 million toward our $23.5 million initiative to launch the Canadian Allied Antimicrobial Supply Resilience Initiative. The project will help secure a variety of broad-spectrum antibiotic and other antimicrobial drugs, with applications in the treatment of priority pathogens, antimicrobial-resistant threats and combat-related infections.
As we continue to navigate an uncertain geopolitical environment, Canada is increasing our multi-use industrial capacity to support the commercialization of life-saving innovation and protect our security of supply. API is uniquely positioned with its core sovereign capabilities, and will provide end-to-end domestic manufacturing of antimicrobial products including petrochemical-based small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients, leveraging the Alberta industrial heartland and creating more dependable access to critical medicine during supply chain disruptions or public health emergencies.

The finished products will be produced at API’s Critical Medicines Production Centre, a new 83,000+ square-foot manufacturing facility scheduled to open next year at the Life Sciences Campus in Edmonton. Funded through the Canadian Critical Drug Initiative (CCDI), a project led by API, the facility will be the largest of its kind in Canada and provide flexible manufacturing capabilities helping to strengthen Canada’s sovereignty while providing life sciences innovators with much needed clinical and commercialization capacity. The CMPC is purpose designed for critical medicines and has the ability to support nearly two thirds of products on the Health Canada Critical and Vulnerable Drug List.

Investments like these are essential to progressing Canada’s journey toward a more resilient and sovereign life sciences sector. By advancing Canada-first initiatives and continuing to invest in dual-use infrastructure and industry, Alberta is positioned to protect Canadian sovereignty, bring life-saving innovations to market, attract highly skilled talent and build partnerships that drive long-term economic growth.
