Visit with Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Public Services and Procurement
We had the privilege of co-hosting the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Public Services and Procurement along with our partners at the University of Alberta and the Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Institute. We discussed innovations in the life sciences sector, what Canada can do to address critical drug shortages, academia-industry partnerships, and the importance of training and retaining our life science graduates.
We would like to thank our colleagues who joined us both in-person and virtually to discuss ways to strengthen Alberta and Canada’s life sciences sector, continue our work in life-saving research and drug development, and how best to prepare for the pandemics of the future.

Did you know that drug shortages are common in Canada? In this podcast by the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ), our CEO, Andrew Maclsaac and Dr. Mina Tadrous, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto, speak about how medications are made, where issues come up to create shortages and what API is doing to address these challenges now and in the future with the Canadian Critical Drug Initiative.

Last month, our Director of Corporate Affairs, Hana Marinkovic, had an opportunity to speak to BioTalent’s national partners about the work that we do, our ongoing priorities and the opportunity that exists for the life sciences in Alberta and Canada. Thanks very much to the team at BioTalent Canada for the invitation and the great work they’re doing in convening a broad network of life science stakeholders from across the country.

Rhannanda joins us as a Laboratory Technician – Analytical Work. With her background and experience in Analytical Chemistry, she will contribute to our work in developing therapeutics, drugs and treatments that improve patient health.

Forward/Slash will bring together regional leaders from across the Edmonton Metropolitan Region to purposefully, proactively, and inclusively build towards a thriving future for our region’s economy. One of the goals of the summit is to build awareness of the activities that are happening across a range of diverse sectors in the Edmonton region including the life sciences.

In this video, we’re excited to profile Alberta-based Sinoveda and sit down with Co-Founder, President, and CSO Dr. Yun Tam. Sinoveda is a life science company that is making strides in the natural health product and therapeutics markets. Combination of Drugs for Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes may be more effective than a Single Therapy
A team of researchers from University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry have collaborated with Timo Müller, director of the Institute for Diabetes and Obesity at the Helmholtz Diabetes Center and a researcher with the German Center for Diabetes Research in Münich, Germany. Together, they will work to identify personalized prescriptions for weight loss and blood glucose control, especially for kids. The goal is to develop personalized prescriptions that are more effective than single drugs and that can potentially replace more invasive treatments such as bariatric surgery, especially for children.
